OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Medal will be awarded! The sales tax rate in Rawling County is 5%. At this rate, how much tax will be charged on a clarinet that retails for $150? A. $7.85 B. $7.50 C. $157.50 D. $75

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

turn 5% into a decimal .05 now multiply (.05)(150) and what do you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Price * tax rate = sales tax

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

$75 I believe.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Check your decimal placement.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I believe I am right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know you are wrong. Trust me, check your decimal placement.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

I multiplied 150x0.5 and at first I got 750 and then I moved the decimal I place to the left and got 75.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Think about this -> $75 is what percent of $150?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When changing a percent to a decimal, you need to divide by 100 because percent means out of 100.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

So do you mean that I need to multiply 150x0.75?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, you gave the answer as $75, I'm suggesting that you think about that and does it make sense to say that 75 is 5% of 150? When you consider that 75 is actually half of 150 it is 50%.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

its not .5....its .05

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Go back to the formula I gave you. Price * tax rate = sales tax

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Oh ok. Now I get it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Texaschic is right.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

So since it is out of 100, it means that 5/100 is actually 0.05

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

yes

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Thank you @gypsy1274 for taking your time to explain this to me.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

she is good

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is @texaschic101. Good teamwork everybody.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Thank you

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

thats what we are here for :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just an added note since you will be doing this soon... Total cost = price + price * tax rate

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

You two are the best! :)
