if you have f(x) = x+5 and you want to shift it to the left 6 units, then you would replace the 'x' on the right side with "x+6" to get g(x) = (x+6) + 5 g(x) = x+6 + 5 g(x) = x+11 so g(x) = x+11 is the function f(x) shifted 6 units to the left
