When elements come together to make compounds do they retain their individual properties?

They don't. Think of sodium. Soft, shiny metal that causes flames to appear when dropped in water. Now chlorine. Greenish gas, toxic. Put them together and sodium chloride appears. Salt. Neither green, shiny nor gas (at room temperature).
