humm this is a little confusing to me because the sum of 8 and 12 is written 8+12 adding x into the equation 8+12=x It might help if you could share what type of math you are doing this for?

"The sum of 8 and a number is 12" Would suggest that if you add 'a number' to 8, you get twelve so 12=8 +some number let's call this number 'x' Then 8 + x = 12 Hope that helps
