How were the original 13 colonies established?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

England came over to america and founded them. Kings granted land gifts to nobles. Virginia was named that by Sir Walter Raliegh after Queen Elizabeth because she was a virgin queen. Pennsylvania was named after William Penn. New York was named after the Duke of York. King Charles gave New York to his brother, the Duke of York.

Massachusetts - Established through the efforts of a commercial agreement with the Plymouth Colony (the Pilgrims) and a Royal Charter from the King with the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Connecticut - Formed from several small colonies with Royal Charters from the King. Rhode Island - Established by Roger Williams when he was thrown out of Massachusetts. After beginning a settlement by buying land from the Indians, he then spent a few years petitioning the King and was given a Royal Charter. New Hampshire - Originally a proprietary colony but about all that insured was that it was the name of the colony was named after the founder, John Mason's home county. There is also a town there named Mason. He died before he could do anything with his grant and New Hampshire alternated between being a part of Massachusetts and finally having its own Royal charter. New Jersey - Originally settled by Swiss and Dutch. It became a Royal Colony after New York (New Amsterdam) was taken from the Dutch by the English as part of the negotiation to end a war between the two countries. It was then made a Royal Colony. New York - Began as a colony of Holland called New Amsterdam. When England got the colony from Holland it was given to King Charles 2nd's brother, The Duke of York, who would later become King James II. This colony went from being a proprietary colony of James to being a royal colony after he abdicated his throne. Pennsylvania - A proprietary colony given to the Penn Family by King Charles II. This was ostensibly to pay a debt that King Charles owed to William Penn's father, a great Navy Admiral. Maryland - A proprietary colony given to Lord Baltimore, the head of the Calvert family, It ws given to him as a haven for Catholics who had undergone severe persecution in England. Delaware - A royal colony that at the time of the revolution was still thought of as mostly a big county of Pennsylvania. Virginia - A royal colony that got its start as a commercial venture of the Virginia Company who's original hope was that great Gold mines would be found there. North Carolina / South Carolina - Began as proprietary colonies given to several Aristocrats from England. They soon found that they could make more money selling off the land than trying to "rule" it. As more and more people emigrated to these areas, they came together to ask for a Royal Charter for each of them. Georgia - Begun as a Proprietary Colony to a man named James Oglethorpe. It's original purpose was to be a place where poor people who were in debt could go to start a new life. So as you can see, there are three main ways that a British Colony in North America were established. - Commercial Venture - Royal Charter -Proprietary (Privately owned)
