PLEASE HELP!!! This is a geometric sequence but can somebody just explain why? (you do not need to solve) Jackie deposited $5 into a checking account in February. For each month following, the deposit amount was doubled. How much money was deposited in the checking account in the month of August?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is a geometric sequence beacause...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, a geometric series is created when a term is multiplied by the same number, over and over again. In this case, the first term (5) is being doubled by a common ratio of 2 (doubling). So the sequence would go a little like this: 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 160... It's geometric rather than arithmetic because the terms are all MULTIPLIED by the same number rather than simply going up by the same number. To solve, consider the month of February ($5) the first term then figure out what term August would be (7th, I think) Hope this helps!

so this is my answer...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is a geometric sequence beacause the terms are all MULTIPLIED by the same number rather than simply going up by the same number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Basically, yes. It has a common ratio (multiplied by the same) rather than a common difference (adding the same)

thank you!
