Salisbury High School decided to take their students on a field trip to a theme park. A total of 150 people went on the trip. Adults pay $45.00 for a ticket and students pay $28.50 for a ticket. How many students and how many adults went to the park if they paid a total of $4770?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like what are the equations here?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

we need two equations, and we have one condition on the total number of people (150) and the total price paid (4770) let x = #children and let y = #adults what equation do we have for the total number of people?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

28.50x and 45y

OpenStudy (turingtest):

well that would not pertain to the number of people, because the total number of people has nothing to do with the price of each ticket. That is the left-half of the other equation, which should be equal to what?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

28.5x + 50y = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so 78.50?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

where did you get that number?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so what are the two equations?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

well first try to get the one for just people x = #children and y = #adults so how can we represent the total number of people?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 28.50x+45y=4770?

OpenStudy (turingtest):

good, that is the equation for the total price

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then x+y=150

OpenStudy (turingtest):

perfect :)
