Let P be the set of all people (alive or dead). Let f: P → P be such that f(x) is the birth father of x. Let y be some person. What is the relationship of (f compose f)(y) to y?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

f(f(y)) y is some person f(y) is the birth father of y so f(y) is y's father f(f(y)) = f(y's father) = y's fathers father = y's grandfather

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

zzr0ck3r has it pretty much, the only thing I would add is that (f o f)(y) or f(f(y)) is y's paternal grandfather (ie the grandfather on the father's side, not mother's side)

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

good call

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

what is it called if it was on his mothers side?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maternal

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):
