Paul's average (mean) for 3 tests was 85. The average of his scores for the first 2 test was also 85.What was his score for the third test?

OpenStudy (ivettef365):

looks like all are 85

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how come?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, if the average of the first two tests is 85, and the score on the third test is something different, the overall average has to be something different. That means the third test has to be an 85.

Actually, they don't have to all be 85; if the first was an 80, and the second a 90, the average of the first two would be 85.
