The original 13 colonies were much larger than their current sizes. How did these colonies shrink to their current sizes? And when did this happen?

They shrank to current size when more land was added to america and divided into states.

They were divide accordingly after the Constitutions. Some governors wanted separate state for them and that's how few were split up.
