In a direct variation, y is negative four when x is 2. What is y when x equals negative fourteen? A)-28 B)-7 C)7 D) 28 please help me..Explain!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok well when u set up direct variation, you place either the x over the y or y over x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When two variables are related in such a way that the ratio of their values always remains the same, the two variables are said to be in direct variation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in this case, im gonna put y over x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes so thats -4 over 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so: -4/2= y/-14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we have the point (2,-4) so y=-2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let x=-14 in that equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you cross multiply, which would end up like: 56=2y

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=-2(-14) =28

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then divide by 2 and u have ur answer. I really hope this helps you! Good Luck :D

Thanks both for explaining it! I understand now!
