OpenStudy (festinger):

On the periodic table, the horizontals (called periods or rows) are those elements which have the same number of electron shells. The groups are verticals called columns and sometimes groups(recall how tower columns usually stand). They are arranged in such a way so as they have the same number of electrons in their outermost electron shell and thus similar chemical properties.
