Find the surface area of the figure to the nearest whole number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A. 310 ft2 B. 158 ft2 C. 135 ft2 D. 74 ft2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it is 74 ft2 ????

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

how did you get 74?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Don't forget to subtract interior faces.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm so confused

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are so many formulas

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you will use 2 formulas area of a rectangle: A = L*W area of a triangle: A = (b*h)/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'd take it as viewing each face separately. You have the bottom face which is 4.5 by 4.5, which equals 20.25ft^2. Next, there are four rectangular faces each with 4.5 by 6ft dimensions, which comes out to four sets of 26, which equals 104ft^2. Now the last set is the top four pyramidal faces which the way to find the area of a triangle is bh/2. Now the h is 3.3 which is given, and by moving up the 4.5 from the bottom edge to the pyramidal edge, you have the base and height you need. (4.5)(3.3)/2 is equal to one triangle, but there are four, so you can multiply this by 4 right now to receive this: (4.5)(3.3)(2) Now multiplied out, you get 29.7ft^2. Now add up 20.25, 104, and 29.7 to get 153.95 I'm not positive why I came out with an answer which is incorrect but this is the way I solve surface area. Sorry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A=4.5*6 A=27

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

flixoe, 4.5*6 = 27, so multiply that by 4 to get 108

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A of triangle= 4.5*2.5/2 A=5.63

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont get it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the only thing you need to fix in flixoe's work is that 4*4.5*6 should be 108 and not 104 so the answer is really 20.25+108+29.7 = 157.95 which rounds to 158 sq ft

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm gonna fail this course =(

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

don't say that, just keep practicing and you'll get better
