the 48 is the are of the combine figure on the sides, it have a triangle and a rectangle, the rectangle area is 3X6=18 x2 = 36 the triangle have a h=3, l= 4, area = 1/2 (3)(4) = 6 x 2 = 12 36 + 12 = 48
