I guess the best answer though is France. In the late 1800s, Bismarck and Wilhelm were trying to finish uniting the 300 some-odd German states into a united Germany. And they were able to accomplish partly through the Franco-Prussian War in which the mineral rich provinces of Alcace & Lorrane were captured.
