Any ideas?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
take out the parenthesis first
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
Yes.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so it c+4-3c-2=0?
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
Correct. Now use the idea of balance to get the variable on one side of the equals sign.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
First simplify what you have.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i don't understand after that point simplify what?
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
Do you know that subtraction is adding the opposite, right?
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
$$a-b=a+(-b)$$

ok i understand that
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
$$ c+4-3c-2=0$$ $$ c+4+(-3c)+(-2)=0$$
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
Now use the commutative property $$a+b=b+a$$ to move the terms around and combine like terms to simplify the equation.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i still don't understand it. i got lost
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
Do you understand this? $$c+4-3c-2=0$$ $$ c+4+(-3c)+(-2)=0$$

yes im guessing you did the opposite of subtraction.
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
I am using the definition of subtraction: $$a - b = a + (-b)$$
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
$$5 - 2 = 5 + (-2) = 3$$
OpenStudy (anonymous):
its hard to understand because my school didn't teach me nothing about the definition of subtraction. Im sorry but maybe i need someone by my side showing me cause im not getting it.
OpenStudy (skullpatrol):
What grade is this for?
