An airplane is heading north with a constant velocity of 450 km/h. The plane encounters a west wind bellow at a 100 km/h. What is the direction of the plane?
This looks like it's going to be a problem about adding vectors, have you added vectors before?
north-west
What is the angle?
@SA5UK3 have you worked with adding vectors before?
Yep.
Ok, so we have two velocity vectors and we need to add them together: |dw:1374869260996:dw|
|dw:1374869382358:dw| Do you see how we can solve for the angle x? We're going to use a trig function.
13 is what I got
12.52 rounded
Yep, thats right. So, we could say that the direction of the plane is "13 degrees west of north". Alternatively, we could say the direction of the plane is "77 degrees north of west". I got 77 by subtracting 13 from 90. Both of these phrases are equivalent.
Thanks. I need help with another one. I'll post it and tag you.
Ok, I can't guarantee I'll answer it personally but there are a lot of people in this section who are willing to help
