What is the graph of x²/9 - y²/25=1

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

well, is quite obvious is an ellipse

OpenStudy (isaiah.feynman):

Its an ellipse cutie!

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

\(\bf \cfrac{x^2}{9}+\cfrac{y^2}{25}=1 \implies \cfrac{(x-0)^2}{3^2}+\cfrac{(y-0)^2}{5^2}=1\)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So can someon show me how it would look ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

welp, none of my options look like that .

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

yes, because yours is centered at the origin

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

|dw:1374872781806:dw| so there, draw it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what i am supposed to be drawing ?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

an ellipse :)

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

like in the picture

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

an oval shape, like an egg

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1374872807561:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ok i tried.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

that's it, looks perfect :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol okkk. but can i show you my options they gave me ?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ok

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

ohhh .... wait a sec

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

I just notice our ellipse turned into a hyperbola as if someone edited the original material :(

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

someone, no name, changed the + to - heheh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol ooohhh. Opss.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk whats the answer:(. lol ii suck with grapghs.

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

your graph is fine, for an ellipse, but the + turn into a - heheh

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

so that makes it a hyperbola so the values still hold anyway, and so do the coordinates

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be the first grapgh?

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

notice the fraction with the "x" is the positive fraction so that's the direction the hyperbola is opening, over the x-axis the vertices are at x= -3 and x= 3 and it opens to the left and right, away from the center |dw:1374873610234:dw| try again :)
