"Because I Could Not Stop For Death"- Emily wingspaninson 3. What kind of person is Death? How does the poet characterize him? 4. What does the "house" in stanza #5 symbolize? 5. Readers often have different opinions about the final stanza of the poem. Some believe it holds a tone of terror, while others think it expresses confidence and acceptance. What do you think? Explain your answer.
Emily characterizes Death as kind thing. Note, her wording when she says it kindly stopped for her, it's civility, and it's lack of urgency.
What do you think "A Swelling of the Ground" means?
1)The mask symbolizes skin color and the whole issue of racial discrimination. Wearing the mask refers to being perceived as different from everyone else, just because he is darker.
2)Yes, it could apply to others who are not African-American, because there was also discrimination against people of other ethnicities and skin colors...they were all wearing masks, just like the African Americans in the poet's time period.
4)The house symbolizes the grave, or death.
3)He's a civilized, polite person. The poet describes his "civility" and how he "kindly stopped" for her-he drives the chariot. 5) The poet does not have a tone of error here, because the inevitability of death makes life worth living. So death can be counted as a blessing when it comes-an immortal life on Earth would be a curse.
