Value of X ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I forget what I'm actually suppose to do, can anyone give me a hint?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

You need to set up an equation and solve the equation for x. The figure shows that \(-3x - 1\) is equal to the distance between points -3 and 2 on the number line. What is the distance between -3 and 2? Set that number equal to \(-3x - 1\). Then solve the equation for x.

wouldnt the value of X be the distance?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

No. Look at my figure below. In this figure, x is the distance. |dw:1374874201856:dw| In my figure, the distance is x. In your problem's figure, the distance is \(-3x - 1\). What is the distance? How many units is it from -3 to 2?
