Nathan, Joshua, Michelle, and Denise were in a room where a porcelain vase was found broken. When an inquiry was conducted by the building caretaker, each made a statement. Nathan: Michelle broke the vase. Joshua: Nathan did it. Michelle: Nathan lied when he said Michelle did it. Denise: I did not do it. The caretaker knew that only one statement is not true and concluded that Joshua broke the vase. Describe in complete sentences the method you use to show that the caretaker made an incorrect conclusion

I really need help with this please.

We are given that only one statement is false. Logically, by comparing the first 2 statements, one or the other is the false statement because you can't have the situation that both Michelle and Nathan broke the vase. If you assume that the first statement is the false one, then the second statement is true and Nathan did it. If you assume that the second statement is the false one, then the first statement is true and Michelle did it. Those are the only 2 possibilities and in either case, Joshua didn't do it and the caretaker's conclusion is wrong either way.
