ok, so you start with the areas of the two triangles. The sides of one triangle would be 8, 15, and 17, which is a right triangle by the pythagorean theorem. So the area of one triangle is 8x15, which equals 120 in^2 The area of the long rectangle equals (8+15+17)9 which equals 40*9 which equals 360. So the total surface area is: 360+2(120) which equals 600 in^2
