The speed of sound in water is 1498 m/s. A sonar signal is sent from a ship at a point just below the water surface and 1.80 s later the reflected signal is detected. How deep is the ocean beneath the ship? uggghh

OpenStudy (ash2326):

Sound will travel in the water, hit the ocean surface and will reflect back to be detected by the detector. So the sound will travel twice the depth of the sea. Do you get this?

OpenStudy (shamim):

2h=1498*1.80 h=depth of ocean
