a trapezoidal gutter is to be made from a sheet of tin 22cm wide by bending up the edges. if the base is 14 cm wide, what width across the top gives the greatest carrying capacity?

OpenStudy (festinger):

i'm sorry it's quite late here i can't really think... i went to look up what a trapezoidal gutter is and i found a similar question with solution. http://www.mathalino.com/reviewer/differential-calculus/06-09-trapezoidal-gutter-greatest-capacity

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is it actually! thank you so much!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

however i can't understand why the sides are equal to 4 :(

OpenStudy (festinger):

The sheet is 22cm long, while the base must be 14wide. these leaves the sides 4cm-4cm each.
