A. 210 miles B. 165 miles C. 125 miles D. 375 miles

OpenStudy (ankit042):

you know the concept of relative velocity?

OpenStudy (phi):

The train headed for Wichita traveled at 55 miles per hour. how far did it get in 3 hours ?

OpenStudy (phi):

The train headed for Des Moines traveled at 70 miles per hour. how far did it get in 3 hours ?

OpenStudy (phi):

use distance = rate* time then add the two distances

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got that already.. Wichita 165 miles.. the Des Moines is 210 miles... then after that idk what to do @phi & @ankit042

OpenStudy (phi):

they are going in opposite directions, so add up the 2 distances

OpenStudy (ankit042):

You have to find distance between two point A and B

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add up two to each miles i got?

OpenStudy (phi):

add the two distances. one train went north and one went south

OpenStudy (anonymous):

375

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (ankit042):

Great!

OpenStudy (phi):

Does it make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats it!?!!?! thats the answer? i got that it the beggining jeezz haha i thought its asking for something deeper.. nvm thanks guys! @phi & @ankit042

OpenStudy (ankit042):

haha np :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so wait its asking How many miles apart were the trains at the end of 3 hours?.. doesnt it mean minus the miles i got? @ankit042 & @phi

OpenStudy (ankit042):

just check the figure I have drawn

OpenStudy (phi):

distance is always positive.

OpenStudy (ankit042):

Trains are moving in separate direction so as time progresses distance between them will increase

OpenStudy (ankit042):

sorry opposite not separate direction
