Whether you ride on hectic city streets or bucolic [rural] back roads, helmets are essential armor. Bicycle helmets have been shown to reduce the risk of head injuries by up to 88 percent and facial injuries by 65 percent, according to a Cochrane Database Systemic Review published in 2000. Bike riders who play against those odds do not fare well in accidents. More than 90 percent of the 714 bicyclists killed in 2008 were not wearing helmets, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. What is the overall tone of this excerpt? A.) pushy B.) hesitant C.) carefree D.)assertive

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, what do those tones mean? Do you know what pushy, hesitant, carefree, and assertive are? If not, which do you need a definition of?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know the definitions... I just really wasn't sure w/ which 1 went w/ this 1.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it's pushy though.. Not sure.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Which an you eliminate 100%?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Huh?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, with most multiple choice, an answer or two is just really wrong. In this case, I see two that are gone instantly. if you know the meanings, that part should be easy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Assertive & Carefree?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Carefree I agree with. That is like talking about butterflies and moon beams. The other I would get rid of right off is hesitant. That means to have pauses, waiting, moving slowly.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

What it really come down to, for me, is what is the difference between pushy and assertive. And that can be a close call! The language of both is VERY similar. They both take a strong position. They both take the speakers point of view and state it with force. Both can use reasoning.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

One of these two takes a strong stance because they have something important to talk about. Even in advertizing, where it is the sellers point of view, they use this technique because they want the customer to know they care. The other takes that strong stance because they feel they are right, no matter what. They tend to be more annoying and while they might be right, they are presenting it poorly. So, which is which? Which is pushy and which is assertive?
