No, Thomas threatens to beat him. The first mention of it was for troubling him with stories about Covey that were "obviously" lies. He didn't believe Douglass and ridiculed the idea that there was any danger of Mr. Covey killing him because he was a good man. He allowed him to stay that night since it was late but said that he had to be back to Mr. Covey's early in the morning or he would whip him. They were only threats.
