Suzie is five years older than her brother, Michael. Write an expression to represent the sum of their ages of Michael's age is represented by x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+5)+X=Sum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i tried x+5 already and got it wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

add the +X part

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure thats right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cause i thought it could be 2x+5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes or you can try (X*2)+ 5 it means the exact same thing

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks :) but im a try 2x+5 because, i think that would be a easier way to write it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay cool:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

tell me if its right!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok I will when im done doing the other problems

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anything else you need help with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes actually. don't get this problem. A boat is travelling at a velocity represented by 2x^3 - 10x^2 + 7. At the same time, current is pushing the boat in the same direction with a velocity given by 5x^3 + 19x^2 + 4x. What is the total travelling velocity of the boat?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you add the two equations together i believe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup im sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thats what i thought too .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

soo.. how would i add them ? where do i start

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Combine like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the first one would be 7x^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the next one is 29x^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no...Because the 10x^2 is negative

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you subtract

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so -29 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no...9 because the 19 is positive

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but the 10 is negative ? so -10-19= -29...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would actually be -10+19=9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lmao but i asked you if i subtract and you said yes ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

bc thats the same as 19-10 lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok lol so whats next

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since the next two dont have like terms you just add them into the new equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is this the new equation ?? 7x^3+9x^2+7+4x ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

switch the 7 and 4x places and then its correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldn't it still be the same thing tho ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes but thats the right way to write a mathimatical equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok!! so what next

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

are you sure ? lol I thought your supposed to end up with 1 number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no, and im sure

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll see if its right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would you do this ? The number of boys in a pre-school class is given by x + 6. The number of girls is given by x - 1. What expressions represents the total number of students?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(x+6)+(X-1) then simplify it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i put it in the calc and got 5 .?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you dont need to put it in your calculator its an expression

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so how would i simplify it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

since its addition and subtraction remove the parenthesis and combine like terms

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it would be 2x + 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

like terms. so with out the parenthesis it would be x+6+x-1. if you combine the two Xs it would be 2x and then you have 6-1 left which becomes 5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohh well i had the 5 !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yup, close:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you give me a medal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

suree

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fan me !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright back at you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please help !!! Violet has a TV, a dishwasher and a refrigerator in the back of her truck. The weight of the TV is represented by 2x^2 + 4x and the weight of the dishwasher is x^2 + 3. What polynomial represents the refrigerator if their total weight is 5x^2 + 3x + 9?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have no clue on that one...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok thanks anyways

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how old are you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol why ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i wanted see what math your doing lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the 2 you gave me were wrong !!!
