Compare and contrast what happens in mitosis and meiosis and discuss the importance of each process to a living organism.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

mitosis is a multiplicative divison,in this type of cell divison a parent cell(2n) divides in equally same 2 daughter cells, both having chromosome no 2n.this typr of cell divison occurs in case of growth,repairment,etc..but meiosis is a reductional division here a parent cell first produces two daughter cell having half the chromosome no.i.e. n.then these two daughter cells undergo the same process of mitosis, producing 4 new daughter cells.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

meiosis only occurs in gonad cells, like testes and ovary.

thanks thomaster :)

joey do you get this?or should i elaborate?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

importance of meiosis is it helps keeping our species chromosome no constant, because when a sperm or ova is fertilised, they both have n sets of chromosomes,so after fusion the zygote is again 2n,which will give rise to an adult,so ultimately the no is constant

thank you
