Find the measure of the dilated image of segment CD, 2 units long, with a scale factor of -3.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to approach this problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, I just dont know if I should just like make it positive after I multiply them together.. @Arfney

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well the factor you are scaling CD by is a negative 3. So it should not make a positive number.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But how would a line segment have a negative length? @Arfney

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because you have to label a reference point which is the 0 point. From that reference point the answer is in the negative direction. |dw:1375316212406:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So what would be the length?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well if you scale 2 by -3 then it is just simple multiplication 2 * 3 * -1 which would be -6.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But thats not even an answer choice..

What are your choices?
