I agree with JA1. You can go look at your settings. You can choose to accept messages and be notified of mentions only when someone you have fanned is responsible. Or, there's the "no one" and "never" options.

It stinks, though, that you'd have to close yourself off from new people who are polite but haven't been fanned by you.

I could think of a few types of filters that could be implemented, but none without slight social ramifications.

If it's true what some people are saying, and this problem can't be fixed soon or easily, then it would be us who are left to adapt. JA1 said pretty much the same thing earlier.

If that is not true, then maybe a group could think of some really well thought-out ideas to suggest at the OpenStudy Feedback forums, which you can get to all the way to the left, in the middle (on my screen). Or, if that's not there for some reason, it takes me to this link: http://openstudyfeedback.uservoice.com/forums/95895-customer-feedback?lang=en .

I do agree it's an issue. It's sort of like having bothersome neighbors, probably.

Haha I get like 40 notifications everyday I wake up, from all the medals and responses to questions, no spam.
But I see this is a problem. The guy has been suspended many times, let's hope he doesn't return to continue his actions.

@RANE When you tagged me, you said you didn't want to change your settings because then you could, at most, only get notifications/messages from fans and you didn't want that. I agree! I'm in the same boat!

I have some thoughts on it. Like filtering people based on how much they mention/notify non-fans, and definitely put a mention about it in the Code of Conduct or something so they know they can be filtered out, and it's impolite. Another idea was limits to how much a user can mention people like @thomaster suggested. Or even a limit on how many people you can mention in a certain time interval. Messages would probably be similar if they became a problem.

And @chmvijay said, your biggest problem in what you showed us were big time spammers, just a few. The limit idea of thomaster would probably knock down your notifications a bunch! And so would my idea of the filters, I think.

For my filters, I see a lot of ways the idea would be applied. Like what if somebody mentions you before getting to spammer status? Would you then be spared having to see those notifications? Could the filter idea backfire and hurt people who make the mistake of spamming thinking it's standard on OpenStudy (which is why something in the Code of Conduct or something would be nice)? And would the filter be based on the number difference or ratio of how much a user notifies fans of that user versus non fans, and will the time interval in between mentions count? I assume that administrators would have to work everything out, if they decide to tackle this issue.

I do really wish we could do something, because this issue has the potential to hurt people who are polite and want to learn. Like, somebody you've worked with before mentions you, but you miss it in a sea of notifications. That's not fair to the user, and it cuts into your usefulness regarding the tutor side of your role at OpenStudy.

Sweet! @RANE , did you see those results! So those people who spam you, time and time again (and their names look like they just fought the keyboard), they won't be bothering you if you block them and don't reply!

And I hope you feel comfortable blocking that type of user. You can even send them messages to let them know you are blocking them if you want. That might ease and unsettled conscience, if there is one.

Yeah.. For now, blocking those users after the first spam will help your problem immensely.

And I honestly don't know what we could do to help change the site! I think that people should stop mass-mentioning like that, and the site could include that it often makes the site cluttered and less usable (unless that inspires more spamming). But if you or anyone else has some concrete thoughts to suggest, then I think that the feedback forum would be the place to go.
