3 +5 and x^2 is 2x
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i mean i know a little bit.
OpenStudy (nory):
I see what you did, and you did the right thing. But you can't add 3x and 5. That's just not allowed.
OpenStudy (nory):
The right answer would be x^2 + 3x + 5.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
well how do you add them? or is it 5x +5?

You don't. You just write 3x + 5.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
what about the x squared?
OpenStudy (nory):
It's like, if I had 5 boxes and 3 books, I wouldn't be able to add them. I mean, I would have 8 objects, but you can't just say I have 8 boxes or 8 books.
OpenStudy (nory):
The x squared too.
OpenStudy (nory):
does that make sense?

OpenStudy (nory):
It's okay
OpenStudy (nory):
At least you added them
OpenStudy (anonymous):
okay so with that being answer above how do i solve
OpenStudy (nory):
You don't. x^2 + 3x + 5 is your answer.

oh. so exponents cant be added to variables?
OpenStudy (nory):
No. Like in the example I gave above.
Does that make it a little clearer?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Yeah its just going to take some getting use too. i just switched from geometry to algebra
OpenStudy (nory):
No problem. I'm about to switch from algebra to geometry...
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Good luck.
