If y varies directly as x, and y equals 8 when x equals 6, find x when y equals sixteen.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"Varies directly" means\[y=kx\]for some value of k. Once you have the value of k, you can find your desired value of x.

I don't know how to do that yet can you please do it for me but explain step by step?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, your values given were (x,y)=(3,4), so\[y=kx=4=3k \implies \frac{4}{3}=k\]then, for y=16,\[16=\frac{4}{3}x \implies \frac{3}{4}(16)=x=12\]

Thank you so much!
