how old is my child

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my child’s age, increased by 3, gives a perfect square, and when decreased by 3 the age is the square root of that perfect square. How old is the child?

hero (hero):

x = age of child x + 3 = y^2 x - 3 = y x + 3 = (x - 3)^2 x + 3 = x^2 - 6x + 9 x^2 - 7x + 6 = 0 (x - 6)(x - 1) = 0 x = 6

uhh, if you don't know the age of your own child, theres something wrong with you

hero (hero):

He knows the age of his child. He's just giving it to us as a challenge so that we can figure it out. @Luis_Rivera #dontberude
