Because the products of photosynthesis are glucose and oxygen.
Glucose is used as food for the pland and oxygen is released. 
Most organisms need oxygen in order to survive. So that's why photosynthesis is very important.

@thomaster,yes you are right,you can also say that glucose is the main product in plant,which contains the chemical energy,which will be passed to the next trophic level as energy source to metabolic activity of cells consequently.so in ecological perspect photosynthesis is also very important for food/energy source.
