This is a HUGE answer but will try to answer as much as I can. Proteins are chains of amino acids that conduct various (majority) of bodily functions like metabolism (catabolism and anabolism), maintenance of bodily activities, and even respond to stimuli. Basically all the functions can be attributes to proteins in our body. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Amino acids combine in the form of chains to form proteins. It's like lego. You combine various amino acids in various orders to get appropriate proteins. The blueprint to these proteins is held in the DNA. This is the link to the page that says how much protein are required in men and women depending on their age - http://www.fao.org/docrep/003/aa040e/aa040e09.htm Protein can be found in pretty much all kinds of food. Meat as well as some vegetables have protein because the cells are itself abundant in proteins to begin with, but you can just try and google protein diets and you will get a vast variety of proteins sources. Disadvantages of protein: 1. Only protein diet is really bad for the brain because your brain prefers glucose which is not a protein. It can lead to ketoacidosis. 2.High protein diets also have high saturated fats that lead to coronary heart diseases. 3.High proteins also mean that you are restricting your body from other antioxidants and nutrients that you can get from plants or other food types. This means it can cause severe problems like cancer! Tried to answer as much as I could. I hope this helps. :)
