variables

A continuous variable is one that can take effectively any real number value, while a discrete variable is one who is limited to some countable set (e.g. like the colors red, green, blue or the integers from 0 to 5). Clearly, we know speed, weight, and temperature are "continuous quantities" in that they can vary to be any real number; a telephone number, however, has only a limited number of possibilities with integer digit. Similarly, the number of votes for a candidate cannot be for example a non-whole number like \(1.34\) -- a vote is a whole vote! -- so this too is a discrete variable.
