A distribution of numbers has the following five-number summary: 13.7, 24.5, 38.9, 50.0, 73.2 True or False? These numbers can be used to calculate the interquartile range (IQR) of the distribution.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

hint: IQR = (Q3) - (Q1) Q1 = first quartile Q3 = third quartile

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know, but since we have to calculate Q1 and Q3, that means that we cant use the number in the distribution as given.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is a five number summary?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

in other words, what numbers are displayed in a five number summary?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is just the list of distribution numbers as give (in the problem showed)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

but it's a summary of a list of numbers

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

example: if I gave you the list of numbers "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6" the five number summary of that list of numbers is 1, 2, 3.5, 5, 6 what does that five number summary mean?
