A school’s Student Council is selling shirts printed with the school’s logo to raise money for a trip. The printer charges $191 in advance plus $4 for every shirt ordered. The Student Council plans to sell the shirts for $11 each. Write an inequality the Student Council can use to determine the minimum number of shirts, n, they must sell to make a profit.

OpenStudy (lncognlto):

191 + 4n < 11n So 191 < 7n So n > 191/7 191/7 = 27.285.... So the minimum amount of shirts would be 28.

how is it 28

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and not 27

OpenStudy (lncognlto):

Normal rounding rules would make it 27, but it must be 28, and not 27, because 27 shirts would not earn enough money to cover what was spent. 27.285... would earn enough, but one can't sell 0.285... of a shirt. So then the minimum number is the next whole number up, which is 28.
