If it is an identity, the equation is true for all values of x.
An equation is an identity when it is true for all of the possible values of the variable in the domain.
every identity is an equation but not all equations are identities...

If it is not true (i.e. false), then you only need ONE counter-example to show that it is false. Find one and you're done.
