How do I factor this 3x^2-12?

OpenStudy (goformit100):

|dw:1375722216634:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well first you need to take the greatest common factor out: 3(x^2-4) then factor that out: 3(x-2)(x+2)

OpenStudy (goformit100):

and you will finally get 3(x-2)(x+2)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do i find the greatest common factor?

OpenStudy (uri):

3x^2-12 GCF is 3 because 3x1 =3 and 3x4=12

OpenStudy (ja1):

what number can be multiplied into both 3 and 12?

OpenStudy (ja1):

@uri exactly

OpenStudy (uri):

3x^2-12 3(x^2-4)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now i know that the gcf is 3 how do i factor now?

OpenStudy (ja1):

well divide it by 3 like uri showed.
