A car travels a distance of 60 miles, the first half at 30 mph and the second half at 60 mph. If a headlight could burn out at any time, picked at random, during the trip, what is the probability, if the light burns out during the trip, it would burn out during the first 30 miles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The first half of the journey, 30 miles, is covered in one hour. The second half of the journey, also 30 miles, is covered in 1/2 hour. This is a total of 1 and 1/2 hours. The first 30 miles comprises 2/3 of the time (one hour divided by one and 1/2 hours), so you have a 2/3 probability that the headlight burns out in the first leg.
