Look at the net of the given polyhedron. The sum of the number of edges and vertices of the polyhedron is ________.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (mathmate):

This regular polyhedron has 8 faces, and is therefore an octahedron. Each edge has two faces, and each vertex has 4 edges. Can you then figure out the number of vertices and edges?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

12

OpenStudy (mathmate):

12 edges or vertices?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

and how did you get it?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

hint: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octahedron

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i add 8+4

OpenStudy (mathmate):

8 faces and 4 what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

vertices

OpenStudy (mathmate):

There are more than 4 vertices, check the link showing the picture.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could it be 10?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

You can work it out like this: 8 triangles (faces) * 3 sides each = 24 edges But it takes two sides (one from each face) to to make one edge, so there are 24/2=12 edges. Double check this from the link showing the picture.
