the Epic of Gilgamesh is "an epic poem from Mesopotamia, is amongst the earliest surviving works of literature." So what do you think the answer is?
What class would you read a poem in? think of it like that
I read it in a Mythology course in 1978, it contains the Flood story and man's search for immortality. It was not just imaginative literature but was used to question one's existence in the world and your part in it not just entertainment. Oldest pieces of copy's date back to 2,200 BC, most likely compiled around 2,800 BC, and writing at this time was on stone in what is called cuneiform, wedge shape. This was not for the populace but for the ruling elite who I suspect relayed it to the people giving them common a origin and purpose as any culture.
