"Did" is the past tense of "do" while "had" is the past tense of "has/have". He does this every day. He did this yesterday. You eat that often. (verb: do eat) You did eat that earlier. I have a girlfriend. I had a girlfriend. "Had" can also be used with "been" (had been + verb) to be the past perfect tense. They had been together before she left to study abroad. when to use did:- 2. Did: for past actions or facts* usually with given timeframe Eg. (a) I did my grocery shopping At K Mart ( implies I don't now) / Mum did her grocery shopping at 8 am. ( work is completed, past action with timeframe: 8 am) "had" is past tense for "has".
