Why does OpenStudy have ads?

We have ads so we can keep this site free for everyone. We make money when you click on the ads and this money goes to supporting the servers and the team. Every time you click on an ad - you are supporting OpenStudy. We are going to add a few more ads - I hope you will understand why we are doing that. So stick with us - and click away!

Honestly OpenStudy had a big chance to become self sufficient and make a decent profit when it was being funded so much, now it's just there....

They should allow subscription payment with paypal. Most of the users on OS don't have a creditcard. Also bank transfer outside the US isn't possible, which probably prevents a lot of people to subscribe.

Also OpenStudy merchandise would be very cool. Like a webshop where you can buy OS t-shirts, bags, caps, coffee mugs, keychains, usb sticks etc. to support openstudy.

I do not see a use for ads. Most likely users will use some ad-blocker. Second ads may sometimes be malicious, and we wouldn't want OS users getting virus. Also ads ruin the whole appearance of the website. Wikipedia which has millions of users going on, do not have ads. Why should we?

Wikipedia is the 5th most visited site, meaning they have millions of people, going every day, if just 1% of them donated 1 dollar every day you get 10,000 dollars every day assuming only 1 million go every day. And besides, OS has never had malicious ads because our advertisement provider is safe and never post bad ads unlike some other companies. Also if users know what the money is being used for (In this case we use it for maintenance and barley any profit) they would disable the Ad blocking program like I did for this website only.

No...just...no....we don't get paid nor do we have to subscribe to get Ambassadorship, we are simply here to volunteer to help out with making this a warm and friendly place, besides do you see enough ambassadors here to make a good revenue to fill in for the ads?

I saw an ad that was under the list of people online. If that is the only ad that will in that area. This is perfectly fine.
