Well, in any simple 3d object, it is the area of some base side times the height of the whole. What you choose for the base side is usually done because it makes the height easier.
Lets say I had a cylinder on its side like this. I would still pick the circle for the base side because it is easiest to use with the other measure as the height. |dw:1376020262429:dw| See anything like that in yours?

You height is your height. Standing on your feet or laying in bed, your height is still your height. Your feet arte still your base if you are laying on your back or not. Now, your problem is a triangular prism. Is there about it laying on its side that would let you know what the base is?
