Does anyone know any good tips for writing short stories?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Sometimes you have a goal in mind, sometimes not. If you have a goal, an ending, outline things, then write to put it all together. If you do not, then you need to pause at times and make some notes as to what has happened and why. What you are thinking when you write can be important to the contiguous development, so not keeping track of that can change the story as you write, making the end disconnected from the beginning. Finish what you write. Don't like how it is going? OH WELL! Finish it. Your endings will not get better if you don't work on endings. Your revising won't get better if you don't work on revising. So finish every one you start. Become very well versed in the rules of English. Breaking the rules by intent is an art that lets a person enliven and enrich their writing. Huckleberry Finn is an example of this. On the other hand, breaking the rules because you don't know them means that your proper characters won't sound proper and your best will never be the best.
