explain how stabilizing selection decreases genetic diversity

thomaster (thomaster):

Is this a biology question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

The math of it: Its all a question of numbers. After all, All is mathematics :) Usually..nature wants to keep more of us alive than dead.So it avoids taking any risks in genetic matters. i.e it ignores some extreme phenotypes with extreme traits and goes for intermediate phenotypes with average traits. This ignoring of extreme phenotypes means less no. of genes in gene pool and thus reduces genetic diversity.
