How did Northern states feel about the Confederate States of America? The Northern states agreed that the Confederate states should be kept in the Union by force. The Northern states agreed that other states should be allowed to secede peacefully if they wanted to do so. Northern states did not agree about whether to let other states secede or if they should try to keep them in the Union. New Hampshire and Vermont supported the right for states to secede peacefully; the other Northern states wanted to go to war.

I'm assuming this is a written response type question. The northern states weren't convinced that the Confederate States of America was an actual political competitor. In fact, they believed them to be a rebellion against the integrity and pride of the entire nation as a whole.
